Int Seminar2: A Walking Assignment

For this assignment, I picked the neighborhood, Lenox Hill. The reason that I pick this neighborhood is because even I live in the Manhattan and spend almost everyday in here but I never really go to upper east side unless I have homework need to be finish in the Met. So I think it will be a good opportunity for me explore this neighborhood which people consider is the nicest and most expensive part of the Manhattan.

So before my journey to this neighborhood, I checked on the map how big is Lenox Hill. More specific about the range of Lenox hill is from East 60th Street to East 77th Street south to north, East River to Park Avenue east to the west.

This is how big is it on the map.

I went to this neighborhood twice, one is in the morning and one is at night. For the night time I started from the end of the neighborhood which is 77th st, and for the morning time I started with the lower part of the neighborhood.

In these two journeys, I found the major difference is that in the morning this neighborhood is more lively. People are busy heading to school or work, Especially, there has several high school and college. At night, there were very few people walking on the street, perhaps stores and school close, people also went home.

I lived in the Korean Town on 34th st, while walking on the street you would see lots of trash and all kinds of smells over there. However, while I was walking around the neighborhood( Lenox Hill). I see that most of the street are really clean, even they have trash on the street, they are much more organize than the trash in midtown Manhattan and the most important thing is that from 60th st to 77th st. I did not smell anything disgusting in there. I think this is one thing that surprise me. I thought every places in New York is kind of smelly.

During my night adventure, I found one thing that is really interesting is almost every block has a cleaning shop and they all use neon light for the sign.

So I started to collect all the neon sign that I saw during the walking. They all really grab my eyes.

Since this neighborhood is a very quiet place, there were stores on the Avenue but inside the street there were only apartments. Unlike all the rental building surround, most of houses are older and have very delicate detail on the architecture. Also most of the house are beige color or red brick so anytime I see building with other colors also catch my eyes.

Overall, after really walking in the neighborhood for hours. I started to see the details that I never notices before. Even Lenox Hill is also in Manhattan but it still have a lot of differences compare with lower Manhattan and Midtown. Things that amaze me was there were no smell in the neighborhood also, even though the traffic over there was quit busy but people hunk less than the lower Manhattan. Also, while I was there walking by myself, even at night I did not feel scare. One last things that I do not like much about this neighborhood was that every streets are all looks very similar. It was easy to get lost.
