Thomas Lyle Williams – Maybelline Mascara

I am sitting at my desk thinking of who to focus my artist of the week post on when I see my bright pink and gold mascara along with a whole container of other makeup products. In the beginning of the year I wore a full face of makeup out a couple times. Then I started wearing less and less until I eventually stoped. I don’t wear makeup because I feel very self conscious in it and I’m always worried that something has smudged or isn’t blended enough. I am terrified of being that girl who’s makeup looks awful. When I do wear makeup, I normally spend hours examining my face in different light sources to make sure it looks natural and anything but cakey. I wanted to discover who invented Maybelline and what their story was.

In 1915, Thomas Lyle Williams started his cosmetology career at age 19 after seeing his sister create her own DIY makeup. He wanted to tap into the beauty market and his first product was mascara. He named the company after his sister Maybel.
