Time Unit 4: Project Final: Space Rescue

“Rockets and dinosaurs, man. I mean, you are never a grown.” (Watch Dogs 2, Ubisoft, 2016)

Do you know what the feeling is if you are asked to help a spaceman in danger? Nervous? Excited? No mater who you are, how old you are, there is no reason you can resist a “space rescue” fiction. And YOU ARE THE WRITER!

In this project, I wrote a nonlinear narrative about rescuing a spaceman from a spacecraft accident. There are a few unique and special things happening in the story I want to share with you.

Sounds and texts are the only two medias I used to produce this work. I had considered to use images too but I chose to not, partly because people think much more when they read texts than when they see images, partly because I believe images are sometimes restrictions for imagination. If I want to invite my readers in and let them be participants in narrative too, texts are the best media and sounds could help enhance the “haunted” effect.

Second, it did take me a lot of time to figure out the html animation which actually belongs to html5 and was not so highly accessible. Basically applying delay animation in my project, I force my audience to wait for a few seconds (mostly 3s) before actually receiving the reply, thus much closer to reality. Regardless the different time in the universe and on the earth, people usually have to wait for others texting back. Also, a lot motions done by our spaceman need time too.

Third, instead of offering literal choices on the screen for audience, I made some words in the texts become a hyperlink and red for identifying. Interesting thing is my audience sometimes have to guess the outcomes before clicking the words. I believe this makes the whole fiction more interactive and engaging.
