Bridge 5: Reflection

For this final project I wanted to focus on mental illness. College is usually the time where individuals start to develop mental illness, this can make college, an already difficult endeavor, even more difficult. There’s many different mental illnesses I could cover, but for this piece in particular I decided to focus more on depression, since it’s the most widely known mental illness.

I decided I would do five small watercolor illustrations in order to get my idea across. I wanted to represent mental illness as ghost/spirits. The illustration altogether are meant to be a small guide on how to deal and cope.

“Do not provoke spirits if thy come with bad intentions. Pay them no mind.”

“Cleanse the area around you. This will attract spirits that will help you.”

“Get rid of things that bring bad omens.”

“If the spirits keep coming back you’ll have to fight them. It’ll be scary, but worth it.”

“Sometimes it’s hard to fight alone. Bring a friend or two.”

This has allowed me to reflect on my past semester and year in general. It has been a learning experience of dealing with mental illness. I think it’s something that a lot of people can relate to especially in college.
