Uncanny Valley Essay Response

“The Uncanny Valley” is an essay by Masahiro Mori in which he discusses the criteria that should be considered when designing a robot. Although Mori focuses on robotics, his observations can also be applied to designing other things. The uncanny valley refers to the relatability of an entity versus how connected the viewer feels towards it, according to Mori himself. A good example of this is when designing humanoid robots, the closer to realism the robots look, the more unsettling they become. According to Mori and others this is due to the fact that as humans we can tell something is ‘off’, this is due in part to how a robot moves. The movement of an entity can make the uncanny valley more evident.
