My bridge 2 project/visual essay was a comic. My initial idea was to have a linear story, that shows the journey of growing up with a childhood toy. Many of the instances in the comic are events that have happened to me ad my childhood toy, with a few things fixed for the sake of the comic’s length.
These are the first rough sketches I did as drafts so I could get an idea of art style and layout for the comic’s storytelling. I also had to consider the scale of the drawings and how each panel would fit on the page, since the comic would be scanned and printed.
These are the more refined/final sketches that were eventually scanned and edited to go on and be used in the actual book.
I decided to keep as little dialogue as possible, since I felt like the simple story line can provide enough context for the reader. It also gave me to challenge of using visual story telling and visual cues instead of relying on text to move the story along.
I decided to keep the linework and shading simple because I wanted the comic to be reminiscent of children’s books and generally nostalgic.
(although some of them are very illustrative with lots of details, others have simple characters and art.)
The second to last image is the cover, which I also kept simple and to the point. It’s a portrayal of the beanie baby’s face.
The last image shows some questions I considered when I made the comic. Usually when making comics I don’t write many notes and just tend to draw a lot of sketches.
These are all the scans that were eventually edited and then pritned into the booklet, unfortunately I don’t have the prints or pictures of the prints that show the whole book put together. I’ve put the pages in chronological order to show how the story progresses.
