Project 1.2: Understanding Sensory Capacity: Sense Labs

The reason that I chose to use the thick metal sheets is because I was walking to class and I found it in the pile of materials that were being given for free. The material was originally used for constructing air ducts, and so it was curved when I took it with me. I needed to flatten it, and that made me interact with my material even before I started to structure my work. The materials that I used to connect my pieces was wire that I found that was bundled together and discarded. I try to work with these materials that people would put in the waste because it gives a new life to the items that would use more energy to break down and thrown away.

The second sense lab that I created is made of breadsticks and frosting. I chose to do this because I wanted to use a material that anyone can use and because of its softer qualities. The materials were bought for less than ten dollars, so it was very affordable, and I enjoy challenges.

The interesting thing that I found while working with these two materials was that the first one made my hands appear delicate because it was a fight to tell the metal where to go, and it made my hands raw after trying to cut the faces. When I worked on the second project, the roles felt reversed, and I had to put more energy into cutting the pieces correctly and not break the sticks while storing them and as I cary the project. The metal makes me feel less worried to place it anywhere and it feels colder, and the breadsticks create a textured face with the cylindrical feeling of the face.
