Cartography – Digital Grisaille

Above showcases the evolution of my Digital Grisaille, starting with the base charcoal drawing (left) and ending with the final, digitally converted photoshop export (right.)

This was the first project that I completed in which I felt satisfied with the end result. Prior to the Digital Grisaille I felt like I really struggled translating my thoughts and view into a final piece. However, because we had to use photoshop to digitally convert our charcoal drawings, I could really take advantage of the precision of Photoshop and move forward on creating my end vision. Before beginning bringing the drawing into Photoshop, I knew the most important aspect of the entire piece would be in the gradient shadows and global value scale. Even though my original charcoal drawing was not the most accurate, I utilized Photoshop’s drawing tools to fix a lot of the shading and line hierarchy that needed to be restructured. Overall, I think my finished project works so well because it replicates natural light and precise lines that give off the desired “Digitally Rendered” look.
