Ken Wong – Perspective

This semester I am taking Space and Materiality which is essentially a class that teaches you the fundamentals of 3D space and basic sculpture. We are currently doing a project in which each student has to recreate a rub ix cube (27 1 inch cubes) shape comprised of 3 different mediums. So this could mean a 9 cube section made out of wood and then 2 more 9 cube sections made out of different materials. I am choosing to create the sections out of wood, plaster and acrylic. To get an idea of how these shapes will fit together I sketched out a rough concept. When sketching cubes a perspective must be chose. Which brings me to my keyword in today’s post. Perspective. In cube drawing  – or any drawing for that matter – perspective can be either orthographic or axonometric. Think of orthographic as the way you see things normally. Whereas axonometric is a unique perspective like isometric or diametric. Google those words for a visualization. Isometric artwork has always drawn my ideas due to its simplicity and often “engineered” look, appearing as a blue print or a schematic rather than a simple drawing. I also play a lot of video games and a large part of my game library is isometric puzzle games. There is one in particular that I believe is the most beautiful and complex isometric game out there, its called “Monument Valley” for iphone and ipad. The artwork and game play is so good that I researched the artist, Ken Wong and purchased some of his screen grabs from the games scenes.
