“There is absolutely no logic in wrapping something as fleeting as food in something as indestructible as plastic. Plastic food and drink packaging remains useful for a matter of days yet remains a destructive presence on the Earth for centuries afterwards.”

Europe’s first plastic free shopping aisle has opened up in the Netherlands and finally it will provide customers the option of buying all grocery necessities without contributing to the ever growing plastic islands and polluted landfills.  It is about time that large chains step up to the plastic epidemic and taken measures in reducing their waste or at least alerting consumers about shipping consciousness.  This should have been implemented earlier before the situation has become so dire, but better late than never.  I wonder why other stores and other countries have not stepped up to the task because honestly, what could they lose?  In fact I think that they would increase profit by catering to the environmentally friendly as well.  The Netherlands supermarket has proven that it is possible to make environmentally conscious products readily available while offering them at similar if not same prices as their plastic ridden alternatives.  It is so ridiculous how food has to be covered in plastic, even when not necessary.  I have seen peeled oranges in plastic containers and it is frustrating.  At what point will entire supermarkets be filled with non-plastic goods?  Will that ever be the case?  It is up to us designers to provided bio degradable and environmentally friendly ways to package and sell.
