Berger – “Publicity”

1. What do you agree with? Why?

John Gerber believes that “publicity is the process of manufacturing glamour,” and I cannot agree more. Glamour plays a huge role in society since people tend to prioritize appearance, style, beauty, etc. Therefore, glamour is something people desire, which is a selling point for businesses. I believe that advertisements today are very effective because they are so convincing that it makes you wonder what you lack what you should become, and stimulates the image of perfection so that it meets the ‘beauty standards.’

2. What do you disagree with? Why?

There was one part of the video where it shows a spray advertisement for women, which promotes that if women were to use this product, they would feel wanted. The video then shifts to show women factory workers putting together the spray product. Berger is trying to suggest that other women are doing repetitive and boring works, which contradicts with the idea of ‘you will be wanted’ image. I disagree with this point because I do not see a connection between the two subjects. I think that all factory works are monotonous and it does not define whether this type of work is suitable or not. They are repetitive, but it is part of their work.
