The Advantages of Vintage

THE ADVANTAGES OF VINTAGE

this was a really interesting piece to me because as a fashion student without a lot of money, i normally try to thrift any kind of clothing i want to buy. I also am not too big a fan of most of what is going on right now in fashion. Hence, vintage clothes are my salvation, not to mention, a perfectly sustainable way of buying clothing.

The word vintage to me, with regard to fashion means old enough to be considered a part of fashion history. A marker of what was going on at the time. I thrifted a 2001 helmut lang dress that was sheer, slinky yet very covering in an interesting way.

This told me that this brand, at the time, was geared towards a subversive yet still somehow overt sexuality, with less focus on bearing skin and more on showing the body in a teasing, seductive way.

The term vintage has been abused by popular culture, anything resembling something from the 70s or 80s being labeled vintage by fast fashion labels who want to sell a false, almost appropriated version of vintage, and the cool factor that comes with it.

vintage shopping is also as i said a very sustainable and responsible way of shopping for clothes that do not add to the growing waste that fashion creates.

About me: coming from a country where the arts, queer culture and anything subversive or controversial was never given importance or were frowned upon, I am deeply interested in all of those things. Artists and designers like Le Corbusier, Rouchamburg, Margiela and more inspire me and my love for archiving, deconstruction, Dadaism and the grotesque. I am also incredibly passionate about fashion, cinematography and the Marquis de Sade. What I want to bring through in my work is a study of some of my obsessions, both thematically and in execution, some of which are controversial in their content but that's why I chose a school like this where a voice is recognized
