Tile with self portrait
2019.November
Prosess:
Attach our tiles into two semi circles and layer them.
Sketch:
I painted both sides of the wood tile and four sides
Then I made a collage about my childhood memories and what I am into right now. I used to learn ballet dancing because my parents wanted me to fit the ‘standard’ of a girl, and luckily I did not hate ballet dancing. I practiced very hardly because I truly liked it. But once I lost my interest in it at the age of eleven, I hated going to ballet classes and I used my money to pay for jazz dance classes. I love the more energetic and aggressive choreography than ballet dancing. Because a good ballet dancer needs to make every movement standardized and perfect. I hated being perfect, it gave me headache, although I enjoyed the applause of audiences. Anyways, hip pop, jazz, pop music, heavy metal and psychedelic rock are my real interests. I added those elements into my collage.
After arranging my collages, I started to make wood joints. I could not get all of my things done, like making a drawer, an opened window or a curtain. I only made a frame and a shelf.
I also drilled a hole to put a note of my secret and a piece of dowel in it. I glazed it afterwards, so that it became invisible.
Reflection:
I was amazed seeing all of our tiles getting attached to each other and everybody has his/her unique style. The whole thing was interactive and interesting from outside to inside. I like two of our classmates’ work for the most. One is from Heidi and the other one I can’t remember but I kept staring at their works thinking how can people be so creative and thoughtful. Heidi has a cyber punk style, she made a 3D computer and a keyboard and she was very good at doing pink vibes. I saw our classmates trying to play with the keyboard and interact with it. Heidi’s work caught my attention from the first sight and I think it also revealed her personality for a bit- thoughtful and hardworking. I see warmth and hardworking from her tile. She must had been spending nights for that. The other tile has a red background, loads of collages and a candle on it. I was not attracted by it from the first sight because I only saw the back of it, it was painted all red. But when I walked around to see everybody’s work, I stopped by it for the longest time and took a snapchat to tell my friends that my classmate got some real talents. The front was fascinating! Those collages was so lovely and had a vintage style of it, it was vibrant and most importantly, all of the elements worked along. I did not like it because it has a candle, although the candle added more fun for people to watch.
Everyone put more energy to this project than the last one. Because some of us never worked with wood joints in the past, so the previous project was giving us a hard time, but after practicing with it, I see so much improvements from all the students in this tile project. I never thought about how those firm wood joints could be so lovely and vibrant.
