The national monument I picked is The Stonewall Inn Bar located on 53 Christopher St, NY, NY, 10004.
On July 28th, 1969, a steamy hot summer night, the modern gay right movement began.
Ironically, this used to be a large LGBTQ population living in this area. Many homosexual people moved to this area because they thought it would be more freedom here in a big city. But the area with the most gays and lesbians living in had the most chaos. Aggressive Police used to attack and harass innocent homosexual people on streets and in bars because they were thought to be gross and sinful. The Stonewall Inn bar was shut down by different local forces because people were extremely homophobic.
There are two movies that I recommend to people who are interested in this historical movement. Posters are down below.
Artist Statement:
My goal is to create a monument that promotes love, peace and to commemorate those young blood who were courageous. I used acrylic paints on a canvas to paint a rainbow swirl as a background, the color setting has contrast between the lighter and darker. Because there was light in darkness for people to fight and wait for it to come.
I added shiny rhinestones to the center of the rainbow swirl, the red lips with blood is from a t-shirt of Yves Saint Laurent, I added this element to my monument because blood and violence are inevitable in revolutionary movements.
I also wrote down me and my gay friends, my lesbian friends’ thoughts about the definition of love on the right bottom corner.
