PARAMETERS

  1. In the first and second class, I worked on analyzing the relationship between light and shadow, the weight of color and how to use black and white to make rhythms.
  2. During the first class critique, I realized that every student had very distinctive design for their squares. The instruction was simple, but there are so many possibilities for us to only use black and white and create very different styles. We learnt how to use Illustrator from the very basic knowledge and we also made our own squares. It looked different than on the paper squares. The abstraction becomes stronger.
  3. I want to create a sense of deconstructing the black space with white and activate the white with black lines instead of using lines to create motions. I was surprised to see the power of reflecting colors, which add more attractions to the squares. I also did reverse to some squares to mimic the Taiji symbol.
  4. For the last step, I worked on color and I chose an intensive color to join the black and white family. I thing the warm tone color works well with black and white and still stands out. I played with it for a few different trials and here is my final work.
