Chosen Garment and Paragraph

The sketch I created is of a high neck collar and bib modeled off of the victorian style neck collars. The collar base is made from the umbrella as are the tiers of the bib. The bib features multiple tiers covered in a hand-printed fabric in order to achieve a ruffled look. The pattern on top of the fabric is be a combination of sketches of the New York City transit system, maps of subway lines, and photos of chinatown during the late 1800s to early 1900s. Hanging from the bottoms of each tier is a vintage NYC Transit token, a relic from the past, to represent transportation. This part in particular is important to me because it lets me make use of my late grandfather’s belongings. The collar/bib when seen from afar looks like a regular piece, but up close the bib provides a look into both the New York City transit system and Chinatown as they were being developed. The bib serves serve as a tool to educate the wearer on this topic. Because it features a high neck, it serves a functional purpose of keeping the neck warm in cooler weather, potentially replacing both the form and function of a scarf.
