3 Images to Map

1. World War II Propaganda Poster for Recruiting Women into War Work

After Mapped

I chose this picture because it really emphasizes my theme Identity. It shows another side of females. In this image, this woman is strong. Her eyes show that she won’t give up and her hands are working at some machines to probably make supplies that can back up the wars that the mans are fighting. This overthrows the stereotype of women in the early 1900s that they are tender and weak physically. They should be staying at home and take care of children, and going outside and working are nothing related to them. But in fact, women are strong. They can earn money through their own hands. While their mans are fighting at wars, they are able to actually do something to support them. I feel it’s a really encouraging image to me because it’s a propaganda around 1930s, and people are slowly starting to change their stubborn views on women.

I used the dark blue to emphasize the lines, especially on the machines and at the background. I used the red lines to emphasize the textures on this woman’s shirt and green of the textures on man’s suit. I used orange, light blue, and pink colors with transparency to cover up the space of the background. I used also light blue on mans’ caps. I feel their caps are hard and in a certain shape, so I think they can be defined by forms. I used yellow on the machines, and they are really proper, geometric shapes so I defined them as shapes. The woman’s eyes are really outstanding, so I highlighted this as emphasis. Finally I selected both woman’s and man’s hands and filled with purple color and labeled them as movement because I think hands represent movement.

2. Hedy Lamarr

After Mapped

I chose this image because it is provides me ideas of the identities of women. Because this image is right after the propaganda of women in WWII, I feel I suddenly was inspired that I might want to do something related to different sides and personalities of a woman being presented. In this image, this woman is called Hedy Lamarr. When I first looked at it I thought this might just be a photography of a movie star or some last century’s duchess. But after I read the description, I found that this woman was not that easy. She indeed was a movie star and was even called the world’s most beautiful woman in 1938. However she became dynamic inventor. What she and her friend invented provided a foundation of the GPS, Bluetooth, and Wifi in our modern days. I was impressed that by the same time of being a movie star, she was so talented in another totally different field. If I could only look at the image I would never guess what she had accomplished. So I think the hidden identities or characteristics of a woman are really good topics that I can use later.

In the mapping process, I labeled her dress with red and light blue as textures. I think the corner she’s at was really interesting because I could find many straight lines in the back, and they are yellow. I used pink to fill up the space in the back and blue are defined as contrast because they are actually shadows. I used different colors(purple, pink, green, blue) to fill up the floor, light green as values of the patterns on the wall at the back, deeper green as the variety of the more further away background, and yellow as the movement of her hands. Finally I think the facial expression is the most important so I labeled it as emphasis.

3. Women in Different Parishes Posing

After Mapped

I chose this image because I am really interested in the outfits that these two women are wearing, the whole image looks very vintage, and the way they are standing together gives me a sense of harmony. This image is for sure related to my theme identity because it has people in it. Through their hand motions and facial expressions I can have many guesses of what they are thinking and working on. I feel that in different places and in different eras, people’s outfits could be really different. I’m not sure where these two women were from, but their outfits really got me interested, especially the hats. I am not sure how they kept this way on their head but they look distinctive. I’m also not sure what they are holding. The one on the left side looks like a bunch of containers. The one on the right side looks like a soft stuffed toy. Maybe they are just their handbags in different styles. The left one is focusing on her handwork, and the right one is staring at the camera. I guess this image shows a daily basis of two women in a certain place, and from two different parishes, their outfits are little bit different from each other’s.

In the mapping process, I selected the background and filled with light blue, and I labeled it as space. I selected their hats and filled with different colors which are pink and blue, and I labeled them as forms, because I really do think they are interesting in their particular shapes. I basically selected both of their clothing and labeled them as textures. I used mainly orange, red, and yellow. I selected hands as movement and the things they are holding as shapes. I highlighted their neck ties just to make the mapped image more interesting. There are straight lines on the ground, and I used pink to highlight them and fill the spaces with blue and yellow equally.
