DIGITAL IMAGE DIARY – PART 2 & REFLECTION

Introduction

In this project, we looked up photos that we interested in, chose one out of them, and turned it into a new design. The images I chose are related to women. When I looked at a propaganda post during World War II that was to encourage women to stand up and work, I felt I was inspired by that. Women’s rights have always been a very controversial topic in the history.

Original Image

When I was looking at this image, I came up with three “what if”questions:

What if this propaganda changes to a gif?

If this propaganda changes to a gif, I think it would be a repeating motions of the woman rolling up her sleeve, and in the background, the men are waving their arms as they are running to the war field. Additionally, there can be a flickering light in this woman’s eyes just to make her look more steadfast and the signal of this gif more clear.

What if this woman is a person from the upper class in the society?

If this woman is from the upper class in her society, I think she does not have to work even though it’s most women’s will to work during that time. Because she’s born in a really wealthy condition, and she might even have servants in her house. What other woman have gone through might not fit to her story because she doesn’t have to bear with the bias from the society, and her outfits will be totally different from what this woman looks like in the image. Her status kinda cuts off the most of the bias.

What if this is not during the war time and this is not just a propaganda to stimulate women to work?

If this is not during the war time, I think this would be a revolution of women. War only serves as a ignite that make women to think that they should do something to change their situation in the society and the bias from the men. If it’s not the war, it will be something else. It is the kind of thing that’s sooner or later. At that time, the society thought that women should stay at home and take care of children and nothing else. They should receive no education because it was useless. Even though most women did not think that way, and they knew that they were being treated unfairly, they still had to bear it. However, because of the dissatisfaction, these revolutions happened so that now in our modern time females are treated equally in the most countries in the world.

Final Work

I finally worked it as a drawing. I also did a propaganda post but that is more modernized, which I think looks like a magazine cover.

Post Questions:

What is the content/meaning of your artwork and how does it relate to your theme?

The meaning of my artwork, clearly as the text on it shows, is to encourage women to stand up and fight for their rights. The woman in the drawing is meant to look like an elegant upper class woman who lives out a gorgeous life. It is related to my theme because it shows the strength of women.

What are the signifiers in your finished artwork?

I added text and symbols. The texts are”women’s liberation”, “women’s rights are human rights”, and “equality”. The symbols are a female symbol and a fist symbol that represents fighting. There is a women and her finger is pointed at the word “equality”.

Where does your finished artwork belong, eg., a billboard, in a gallery, a prop in a movie or advertisement, etc.?

I think my finished artwork belongs to an advertisement because it is propagandize a message.

Summary

What I learned from this project/making activity was to expand an idea and produce something new.

The material/medium was (or wasn’t) successful at supporting the content because I used the color markers which I think is good at making a poster drawing.

What I learned about my ideas/content through this material/medium exploration was I think it is a really good way to look at images that I’m interested in and make something out of it. It allows me to explore more messages of a work and I also popped out a lot of ideas while I was working on my project. I felt the working process is really fun.

I originally wanted to make a gif from a drawing I draw. I might want to change the colors of the drawing and the gif will repeating the changes between two tones of colors of my drawing. If I had more time to continue working on this, what I would do next is to shoot the photos of my drawing, change the tones(exposure, lightness, etc.) and learn how to do a gif.
