For this project I have collected 10 different materials to create a taxonomy that relates to my topic about the women’s identity especially in Chinese culture. This topic is personally connected to me because I have a huge interest in exploring different identities of women and I’m also eager to use some unique ways to present them. I feel the topic about women is important because it covers a lot in different cultural aspects. In my mind, I want to make a product that represents the characteristics of women nowadays, but I also want to do a simulation of the style of dressing of women in old time. So I collected everything I feel I can make a transformation with in my house.
1) Transparent soap container
I selected this material because I think I can transform this container into a jewel case by using a cutter to carve on it in order to make some patterns. It is made of plastics.
2) Disposable tablecloth
I selected this material because of its various usabilities. Its pattern and colors make me think that I can use this to cover my production. It is made of plastics.
3) Duster cloth
I selected this material because I think I can cut those cloths into pieces and use them as decorations or I can just fold them into forms. It is made of mainly cotton.
4) Quick drying cloth
I selected this material because I think this piece of cloth is really thin that I can sew on it to create some patterns I want. It is made of cotton.
5) Container of the toiletry I bought
I selected this material because I also feel I can transform it into a jewelry case, especially in my opinion, the way to open this container is really appropriate to utilize. It is made of hard paperboard.
6) Cheese container
I selected this material because its plain appearance is really capable of being transformed into a new design. I have a habit which is to keep the things after used. So that is why I could find so many containers. I have a concept to use the containers to make something that are related to women such as jewelry case I said in the beginning. It is made of wood and I feel the wooden structure of this container is really convenient for me to carve something on it.
7) Waxes
I selected this material because I think the waxes can create a retro style of my project. I used to use these waxes to make wax seals. If I use them, I would melt the wax and drip them on the work I do. But I’m not sure about that yet so I might need to try them out first.
8) Heart shape container
It is a cute container of the toiletry I bought. I selected this material because of the shape of heart is a well-known symbol and it can fit into my topic. If I decide to use this one, I might want to cover this up and put something in the container as a surprise as the viewers open it. It is made of plastics.
9) Twigs with fake flowers
It is originally a part of a decoration in my house. I selected this material because I think I can disassemble it and use it as the decorations in my project. It is made of twigs and plastics.
10) Red gauze
I selected this material as the resources of the decorations. Especially it is in red color which is fit to my topic. It is made of gauze, a really thin and light fabric.
