Repair Part 1

Ask A Question

1.Find an object, device or material that needs to be repaired in some way.

1. What object will you repair and why?

Paper.

Do you consider repair to be an important design skill?

Yes, the paper can be used in many ways in our society and the number of paper used each day in our life is not a small number. The recycled writing paper skill can save a lot of trees and wood resource.

Do Research

2. What are 2-3 possible ways this object could be repaired?

Recycled writing paper can be consider as one of the skills to repair or recycled the paper.

What do you need in order to do the repair?

I need used writing paper, flour, stir bar, rag and containers

Do you have the materials and skills?

All the materials can be found at store and I have the skill to recycle the paper.

Construct a Hypothesis

3. What will your process of repair be?

1. Tearing the used writing paper into pieces

2. Putting the small piece into the water over night.

3.Pulling out the redundant water and adding water again.

4.Using the stir bar stir the water and paper together.

5. Adding some flour in it, mixing them together.

6. Making a flat layer of mixture on the rag, squeezing the redundant water.

7. After roughly 5 minutes, separating the paper and rag, putting the paper on a flat surface and wait it to dry.

8. Cutting the edge

How long do you expect the repair take?

Two days

How long do you want your repair to last?

The writing paper can be used again as new paper until next people write on it.

2 Learn about Patagonia’s Worn Wear program

I think the idea of Worn Wear program is successful and viable. I believed not only me but also my peers are wasting a lot of clothes every season. We are interested in buying new clothes but having nothing to do with the old clothes. They finally will become trash in the end. The Worn Wear program solve this big problem in some level. We are able to buying new clothes and meanwhile not wasting the old clothes. I would love to buy their clothes after watching this video. Moreover, this program reminds me of an activity staring in my city. Each our apartment has a box for us to donate the clothes we do not want to the rural area people.

3. What do you think of the ten Long Life design criteria overall?

I think the ten Long Life design criteria overall are pretty useful and straight forward. After reading this article, I have a better understanding of what is Long Life design and what kind of product can be consider as Long Life design.

Which criteria in particular might assist designers in meeting the challenges created by climate change (explain how)?

Personally, I think the criteria Planned Production might assist designers in meeting the challenges created by climate change. According to the article Short Answers to Hard Questions About Climate Change response, the main cause of the climate change is because of human emissions. The wasted material and resources such as plastic bottles or the car emissions may let the condition get even worse. If the designing product itself can solve such problems at the beginning, the conditions of our environment will get better.

What criteria would you add or how would you update the current list to account for specific design challenges presented by the Anthropocene?

I would add “use new energy”. The using of new energy is also a very helpful way to change the condition of the environment. Within the development of the new energy, it will reduce the use of commentary resources we are using now, and people’s choice will be diversified.

4.Reflect on our class visit with Gen Saratani

Which of the Long Life Design criteria does kintsugi fulfill?

kintsugi is an extremely useful design which actually solve the problem of repairing the broken ceramics. This design would let people use ceramics in a longer time and reduce the wasting of the material.

Are you interested in this kind of repair? In what ways?

I am interested in this kind of repair because there is not much complicated technology going on during the repair process. The thing to use in repairing ceramics is pretty simple and easy to learn. In a result, everybody will be able to learn this skill.

Do you think you have the patience to enjoy a process of slow repair?

I do not think I have the patience to enjoy a process of slow repair. In this high-speed life mode, I am getting used to do things in a high efficiency way. A slow repairing may take too much time than the time I would spend on buying a new one.

Do you think a long and careful process of repair can make an object more meaningful?

I strongly agreed that a long and careful process of repair can make an object more meaningful as history always make an object becoming important. For example, my parents had a set of furnitures that was given by their grandparents. My parents take care of them very much. This furnitures are not only a simple set of furniture but a spiritual sustenance.

Does this kind of repair seems like its own art form, rather than just repair?

This kind of repair likes its own art form. For kintsugi, they are not only simple repairing people’s broken ceramics but also trying to find the beauty of broken things during the process.

Does it feel inventive and creative (in what ways?)

It does feel inventive and creative. Firstly, the discovery of using kintsugi is an inventive thing. Secondly, the gold line on the broken parts is a creative art design among the process which reflect the also shows the beauty of broken objects.

Do you think repaired kintsugi designs can become more interesting than the original?

I think repaired kintsugi designs can become more interesting than the original. The original objects have all the same patterns. However, the broken ceramics is always unique. Nobody will know which particular part the object will break, so the repair kintsugi designs will always be very special and can not be made again.

5.Short Answers to Hard Questions About Climate Change response

The article brought the question “How much is the planet warming up”  interested me the most. As the article indicates, the temperature of the Earth has been warmed roughly 2 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880. This problem was wide known as The Global Warming. The heat accumulating in the Earth is mostly because of human emissions. However, what I have notice is that the temperature is actually getting colder each year. Personally, I feel like when the ice started to melt, it is absorbing the heat at the same time, is that the reason why our temperature in recent five years?
