Space&Materiality: 3 Ted Talks

Lilly Lee

William McDonough: Cradle to cradle design

This designer had a mindset to create architecture and designs that would uplift humankind. This designer wanted to create architecture that still incorporated all of the greenness (trees, plants, and animals) of the earth, embracing them in the architectural buildings that he created. He wanted to give life, liberty, and happiness to everyone because he believed design should incorporate that. I feel like his way of closing the system and creating products that are meant to be in a loop to be recycled and compostable, can be applied to our chair designs because we can create chairs that can be easily recycled and composted.

Alex Steffen

Steffen talks about how we can create a better, greener future for our world. He talks about leapfrogging, 2nd superpowers, new tools, we can establish cleaner energy like solar or wind, or even architecture that uses clean water and energy. Steffen talks about how we must start right now to give tools to people in this generation and children to teach them about how to build a greener world. This idea is similar to William McDonough’s idea because they both want people to design and create choices that will affect the environment in a more friendly way.

Suzanne Lee: Grow Your Own Clothes

I thought this talk was very interesting because it taught me about actually creating clothes in a process that I never knew about. Suzanne Lee used microbes and sugar with green tea to create clothes that could easily be composted with your leftover vegetables. I thought this was a genius idea because this is the future of sustainable fashion. This could be used as coverings for furniture, and this can be very easy to make because she said on a hot day, you can even leave it outside. I think this is a big step to creating fashion that is sustainable and responsible.
