I am a person who was born in Seoul, South Korea. I went to UCLA to major in Fine Arts and I am thinking about majoring in Illustration at Parsons. I believe that the greatest art or design is founded in profound truths that express the wonder and beauty of our relationship with the universe. Through my work, I want to show and express to my audience, how art relates to the world and our personal lives. Through my career, as a designer, I plan to represent Korean culture with the most creative design based on each institution’s collection.
I believe that the greatest art is founded on profound truths that express the wonder and beauty of our relationship to the universe. Through my art, I want to show and express to my audience how art relates to the world and our lives. And through my career, as a curator, I plan to represent our culture in the most creative design based on each institution’s collection.
I would like to introduce one of my own artworks that are included in my portfolio. With acrylic, I expressed the most recent social issue: abortion. I portrayed a contrast with one side full of people determined to keep their babies and the other side with a group of people who see abortion as a step to a better life. This work has great significance to me, as it was my artwork in which I spent nights designing the presentation. How can I best depict the social issue?
On the side of people against abortion, I drew two hands in detail making it into a shadow of a person’s side view. This shadow is blowing a bubble with a baby drawn inside, symbolizing a birth of a baby. In contrast, on the other side of the drawing, a hand is poking at the bubble, trying to kill the baby by poking and breaking the bubble. The background is made of a collage of newspaper articles of abortion.
One point in my artistic pursuit, I realized that when my artwork represents a social issue, it could become an influential message rather than a silent masterpiece. From then on, I started to think how I could symbolically transform an image into a statement. And my acrylic painting was my first step towards my endeavor for the voices of the people to be heard.
