Integrative Studio 1: Memory – Project 2: Assemblage 3D portraits + Zine
Interview:
Potluck & other adventures: Opportunities to get to know each other better!
Final piece: Zine of Nicole
Reflection:
After having just written a portrait of my partner, Nicole, in Integrated Seminar, the thought of transitioning our partnership to the context of Integrated Studio was better than I could have possibly imagined! Besides working well together, I felt that Nicole and I had become fairly good friends. We started to hang out and see each other beyond our scheduled times for class and homework. Therefore, I felt obligated to do my absolute best to present all the interesting things I learned about Nicole into an unfamiliar art medium known as a zine (which I discovered was a small circulation of self-published work of original or appropriated texts and images). I restrained from using digital platforms such as InDesign and Illustrator and opted for a more crafty, hands-on approach. I collected a variety of photographs, prints, stickers and other found objects that related to Nicole’s life and paired them with quotes that were lifted directly from my interview with her. When I eventually finished the zine, I was unsure of how I felt towards the result. I was not particularly confident in my work, nor was I ashamed of it either. During the critique, most of my classmates mentioned how similar and cohesive both of our zines were and questioned whether we coordinated with one another during their development – which we did not. We both agreed to not share any part of our zine and have them remain a surprise. Hence, it was a nice surprise to visually see how similar our art styles were, and how our growing friendship was translated through the effort and care put into making both of our zines.
