Project 3: Multiple Images

 Introduction

In this project, we are going to do some further exploration about our transitional space. By juxtaposing multiple images of our transitional space, we should convey a sense of time and motion. For me, I still chose to use multiple photographs to show the change of position and direction of a person in a revolving door.

Step 1 Draft

First, I made some drafts about how to chose my images and how to align them. I think making them into a contour of a revolving door should be very clear and appealing to audience, so I used rectangles with different height aligned to a same horizontal center.

Later I set the height and length of each rectangles on a piece of bristol board(18*24) precisely to fit the actually size(17*22) of our final work. Also, I decided to cut the border with curves to make it look closer to the contour of a revolving door. So I replaced the rectangular panels with irregular panels with curves.

Step 2 Reshoot

However, after finishing my draft, I found the photos I had currently could not support me to reach the effect I wanted. I want to record the process of going through the revolving door for a complete cycle in order to depict all the single change of direction and motion. So I went back to my transitional space to reshoot it.

I took a bunch of photos of other passengers like this, but the effects do not reach my expectation because the route they walk does not fit the route I planned. All of them only walked half a cycle in order to get into another space. Walking a complete cycle will only bring them back to the starting point. So I decided to walk by myself and ask other people to shoot for me.

Here are some shots of the process of my walk in the revolving door. I will to make the background stay still, and only my movement is presented by the photos. To achieve this aim, I put my camera on a tripod while shooting.

Step 3 Combining Multiple Images

This is my first draft. I used 5 separate blocks to represent the motion of different stages while walking in the revolving door. Besides, I made some adjustment to the background to lower its transparency so that the foreground is more highlighted.

Step 4 Making Adjustments to My Multiple Images

I added two more rectangles to my work to separate the motion into more stages and show the time and motion in more details. In this version, two more directions and positions are shown. What’s more, I made adjustment to the background to make it more transparent.

Step 5 Print it Out

time project 3 final

Since we need to print our final work on the photoplotter, we should set up bleeds for our document and select North American Prepress 2 as our color settings. Also, for the printing setting, we are required to select Adobe RGB (1998).
