Project 6: Sonic Portrait of a Space

Introduction

For project 6, we are asked to design our own space and portray this space by sounds. It is quite challenging for me because we have to make up a space in our imagination and try to think about what’s going to happen in our space. Also, I have portrayed a space with drawings or photographs, but I have never portrayed a space with sound, which is very abstract.

Step 1 Design My Space

This is the space I designed. It’s a swimming pool connect with a dark room. The story is: A man was walking around the swimming pool, he slipped and fell by accident. He couldn’t swim and he shouted for help. Then he drown into the water and touched the bottom. He thought he was going to die, but there was a door at the bottom and it opened. He fell to the bottom of the dark room and released.

Step 2 Design the Sound

I would like to use fade-in and fade-out effects to bring my audiences in and out. However, I found it is not suitable for my first and last sound. I started with the sound of footsteps, which originally symbolizes the start of a journey. And I ended with a sigh, which is also a sign of ending.

I listed the sounds that may take place in my space in chronological order.

Step 3 Recording Sound

Basically I record all the sound in my dorm and I have to figure out how to utilize the resource near me in the largest extent.

These are the sounds I record in my dorm in order to show the space in my imagination.

Step 4 Composing

Making a timeline helps me to arrange my materials in a more reasonable why and thus I have a clearly objective when editing.

Step 5

Adjusting the width, echo, volume, pitch, time, and delay of each sound piece is essential when editing because I recorded the sound at different positions in my room. My final work should sound coherent and realistic. I should not let the difference of sound interrupt my audience when they are listening or it will not be a fluent trip.

Final

Reflection

I think my audience are able to understand and see the whole space after my verbal description. But I am not sure if they can see my space in their mind by simply listen to the sound. I think part of the sound do not have a very good quality and I did not choose the most suitable object to mimic the sound, so it might be a little confusing when they only listen to my sound clip.
