One and Three Still-Lifes

Introduction

Joseph Kosuth’s 1965 work One and Three Chairs presented a chair in 3 different forms. Our project was inspired by his work and I presented the objects I selected in 3 different forms. One is very realistic and the other two are all abstract works that conveys different emotions and presented in different ways.

In this project, I first selected 4 items which are important to me. The first object is my water bottle cause I use it to drink water everyday and I cannot leave it. The second object is my pen of kaweco sports. I am a pen collector and I am very fond of this pen recently due to its clear, simple and portable design. The third object is a tape. I like to write traveller’s note and this tape is a very good decoration for my notes. The last object is a badge from the movie coco. Collecting badge is my other hobby because it helps me to keep my memory in a very small item that I can keep it and see it everyday. The movie coco has some profound meaning for me. It provided me a different vision to view the death of my grandma.

Pencil Drawing

Firstly, we were asked to draw the objects we selected in a realistic way. I simply used 2B, HB pencils to draw it.

Abstraction

Polka dot is a pattern I extracted from my tape. Using polka dots of different values and colors can explain the structure of my objects in an abstract way. Personally I did not like polka dots patterns but I thought the applying it to represent highlights, shadows, and shades help to make my picture vivid and interesting. Also, using a few lines with textures make the image more diverse and gives more information to the picture.

Text-Based Draft

These objects are very daily and tightly connected with my life. I want to relate it with an important daily routine, waking up. Since this is so common and repetitive in my life, sometimes I feel like I am running programs like a computer. So I made the image geometrical and add some instructions that look like codings in computers. The text shows the time, the things happening, and my reaction to the surroundings. The tone of my text is logical and the font I chose is robotic, which create the sense of a program.

Text-Based Final

I made some revisions to my draft to make it more “TEXT-based”. I did it by simply removing the abstraction in the background and replace the background into a coding interface. Also, I added my internal activities to the text by using “[” and “]” to make it seems more likely to be a program
