Studio 3D: Assignment 1

For this assignment, we were to think of the body as an armature or imagine the body as an integral part of its logic. Initially, my plan was to create a hand out of plaster and lay multiple layers of color in attempt to explore the relation between our body and the “unknown” world. However, as I was refining my sketches and plans, I was suddenly intrigued by the thought of human evolution. Through this wire sculpture, I wanted to express my vision regarding evolution in terms of De Vries’s mutation theory and not with a darwinistic natural selection. If humans were to further evolve from our current state, how would we evolve? Although there are several wars going throughout the world, I think it’s safe to say that most humans alive have or will not experience war or any form of combat. This means that our body will not prioritize in strengthening our body in terms of power. This made me come to thought of the modern human race possibly evolving towards our new needs; a body that utilizes our existing technology better. Nowadays, we are on our smartphones all day long. Our thumbs are extremely important in order to conduct our daily life and also critical in using our phones. This came into my consideration while designing the structure of the hand, and resulted  in the fingers elongating, and to have an extra ‘thumb’ for optimal functionality. I intended in this piece to be both an observed and worn piece of work.
