Project Statement

homeless-11          homelesscold
As human beings, we need to care about others, those people who live in darkness, cold and starvation. In order to survive, especially in winter, they really need to keep themselves warm in stead of laying on the cold, dirty ground. As a result, most of the homeless who do not have a shelter died in the past winters in the U.S.. With the grant I would hopefully receive, I’m going to design and produce a big amount of “sleeping-bag-jacket” for the homeless in New York City to survive through cold winter.
Since the jacket is designed for homeless to wear in the winter, it will be made of multiple materials which can both avoid rain, snow, and coldness. I will buy a big amount of sleeping bags and add sleeves on them, also make some other changes based on the sleeping bags, and later on add waterproof fabrics on the surface. The waterproof surface will avoid rain and snow. Considering that homeless want to be “invisible” in the streets at night, or even in the daylights, I decided to make the color to black. However, I will add stripes that can glow in the night to aware others that there are people there sleeping. The top and the bottom of the jacket is foldable, so that when those people are not sleeping, they can wear it as a normal jacket and move easily, just tack the parts inside the jacket; at night, they can easily pull out the folded parts and zip them up to a sleeping bag, so that they can keep their hands and feet can keep warm while resting. In addition, I will put several zips on the shoulders, front, etc, so that when the temperature raise they can take off some parts of the jackets to adjust the jacket itself to be more comfortable.
Everyday in the streets of New York City, we see people dress glamorously with their expensive branded clothes, fox furs, crocodile shoes…However, in such a busy city, the existence of homeless people became another unique scenery line existing in our society. As a result, each winter, a big amount of homeless people could not make it through the the cold weather and freeze to death. Some people may ask why couldn’t them go get a job or do something to get money, but most of the homeless are mentally ill and disabled, they really need help from others. I hope that my project will get people’s attention and deliver care and warmth to them.
My goal is that by designing this jacket, more people will start to pay attention to the homeless, to show then that there is actually someone that cares about them and delivers kindness and care, and influence others to do something for people who need help. I hope that after this project, more people who have an ability to help, to give them a slice of pizza, or a old scarf, or even warm blankets. Moreover the project for the homeless can make them feel a sense of warmth and feel happier and warmer in the winter.
