I chose to design and sew this skirt because I was completely uninspired by the clothes I was seeing around me. Every time I wanted to buy something there was a tick in the design that I wished was different, so I thought; why not just make my own piece?
My inspiration was Japanese denim designs from hundreds of years ago. I loved the different ways that denim was collected together and the different patchwork that was constructed.
I also used an arrangement of different interior and exterior landscapes and buildings to inspire my design.
I specifically chose a thicker denim because I wanted the skirt to be able to hold structure. I knew that I wanted it to button at my waist and I wanted the rest of the skirt to open in a triangular shape. By choosing a thicker, rough denim I would be able to execute my design.
I used a sewing machine to make my skirt, and to sew on the button I used my hands.
The final piece was exactly what I imagined in my head when initially beginning my design process.
