Project Deconstruction

This is a untitiled plaster sculpture made for Space and Material: embodied class in 2019 by Joyce Zhu. This project is a instruction to plaster. Base on the term Embodies, She was inspired by the identity combine with human body part, for example, her hands, like the unique of finger tips. Hands is always a identity of a person. Although the final project looks simple, she was satisfied with the detail— without any paints, you are able to see the finger tips on the plaster.

In this project, she used the most basic way of making plaster sculpture. She made the mould first and then fill it up with plaster, which are supplied in The New school wet lab store and  is a requirement for Space and Material class.

She described her work as a first time experience of working with plaster. Since plaster is toxic, it was hard to follow all the rules in Wet lab and working carefully. The most challenging part of this project was to take the plaster out from the mound. If it was not dry, the finger will be fall apart, and the finger tips wouldn’t come off.

She thinks working with plaster is fun, however, it is less creative, since it always requires a mould, so in the later of her work in Space and Materials, she work with more soft structures.
