The constraint I chose for this assignment was to spend exactly 100 seconds every day at 3:00 pm writing down what I was doing at that exact moment. What was interesting about this assignment was not just how I found myself deviating from the constraints, but how because of the way I was dealing with the constraint, I created a whole new constraint. I ended up beginning almost every entry with “I am” or “I’m” without doing so on purpose. I never specifically said I needed to do this, yet almost as if it were a coping mechanism to the constraint, I came up with a whole new restriction.
One of the most difficult parts of doing this project was making sure I stopped what I was doing every day at exactly 3 pm just so that I could spend 100 seconds typing on my phone or laptop. On numerous occasions, I would be in the middle of a conversation with a friend whilst in a store when my alarm goes off and I have to stop everything to do that one thing. At least twice, I would stop the alarm but forget to write the 100-second diary and would later have to fill in the entry by memory.
