Integrative Studio 2: Observation of Art Over Time

Observation of Art Over Time is about meditating, observing and recording the same piece of art over the course of a week. I decided to look at Dorothea Rockburne’s “Two Angels, 100 Years”. Below are the two best sketches I made (which were recorded on two separate days) and some photos I took of the actual art piece itself. Each day, I recorded and observed this piece from different angles so that I would see it in different ways and perhaps notice different details due to the way the light hits the piece.

Below are the rest of the drawings I made:

I wrote a small paragraph detailing some research about the artist:

The artwork I chose to observe, “Two Angels, 100 Years”, was made by Dorothea Rockburne in 1984 -85. It was made with two intersecting canvases that was covered with oil paint and a little bit of gold leaf. This piece was one of the earlier pieces in Rockburne’s career and it is apparent through looking at her other pieces within the same year that she was mainly using contrasting, vibrant colors applied using oil paint. Her works are very abstract due to the odd angles the shapes are put together however it is very clear that there is an unmistakable precision behind the lines that make up these perfect geometric shapes. “Two Angels, 100 Years” is very representative of Rockburne’s most famous works as she is most known for her geometric and abstract work. Since then, she has experimented more with the texture of the paint within her abstract work and has strayed further from coloring within straight precise lines.
