As I look back and reflect on the dress practice log, I realize there are very apparent themes, of which are determinants of my dress choices in my daily life. As a student in New York who also interns, I think the most obvious theme is comfort and practicality for me as any of my days involve carrying many supplies, walking to school and work, as well as working in the studio and sewing clothes. At that point, where I have 15 hour days, I rather choose my sneakers over my ankle boots and my winter coat to my cute jacket. Another theme that I noticed was versatility, which was a determinant of how I dressed in a day when I had multiple places to be and still be acceptable within each places dress codes and conduct(Fig. 2).
Apart from these themes, I have also noticed the vast amount of fast fashion that I wear on a daily basis and how much I rely on brands like Zara, H&M and Forever 21, which is a disturbing finding. As a fashion design student, I always imagine my target market as young woman who is going to college or working right after but I never realized how much the economic factor was involved and how much people shopped at fast fashion brands even after they are past their teenage years.
As I was analyzing how I felt about my “dress” for the day, I found out how closely related my feelings are to how the clothes fit on my body and what makes me feel good. Personally, I do not enjoy my lower body so on the days when I wore a short jacket that emphasized my small waist or boots that made my legs look leaner, I definitely felt better and overall they were better days. Consequently, I became very aware of what I wear and its relation to my body.
