Reflection
Travelling is a large part of my identity. Every summer I travel to Greece which is where my mothers side of the family is from. This is a large part of why I relate to Solnit and her story about “the cave” because she travels to Ireland to learn about her ancestry.
When I go to Greece I get the opportunity to see and take part in my culture and learn more about where my grandparents immigrated from. This country is very special to me because I identify with it so greatly. When my grandmother was about 18 she immigrated from mainland Greece to the United States, and what makes it especially special is that at the time she was pregnant with my mom. My mom grew up with Greek as her first language and every time I go to my grandmothers it becomes filled with loud voices speaking Greek. I grew up with the language, food, and large family. As a kid, being Greek was one, if not the first, thing I identified with. It was something I was very certain of.
I feel that as we grow up and learn about life and who we are there are many things we are uncertain of and our identity becomes complicated. I know that when you are a kid of course everything is much simpler but this was different. Being Greek was a fact and it was who I was. Of course it still is but there are many other things I now associate with very strongly. As we evolve and grow we learn different aspects about us that we didn’t know was there, or we learn knew ones. Being Greek will always be apart of my identity.
