Archive Reflection

Although I had a lot of fun at Interface Archive and found lots of books and art that personally interested me, I was unable to find any information on NoHo and Theatre. This actually forced me to shift my perspective and made me curious about social issues that NoHo had a hand in. Through some deeper online digging, I discovered that NoHo held a “March Against Crack” in the 80s at the peak of the New York City crack epidemic. I already knew that NoHo was highly gentrified and was a central meeting point between several major neighborhoods. However, this new information added a new layer to my research because I was forced to think about how the homeless and the crack addicts were pushed out of the surrounding neighborhoods into NoHo. I realized that the hostility towards addicts and the homeless was very well covered by NoHo today.

Because I didn’t find anything at Interface, I decided to go with Lilly to the library on campus after class. Using the school’s computer I was able to locate an archival source on the Westside Crime Prevention Program after looking up information on the crack epidemic and the guardian angels. The source included some helpful historical information, such as the goals of programs like Guardian Angels and WCPP, that will definitely strengthen my zine and my overall understanding of this specific social issue.
