Bridge 1- 10 Days of Collecting

Assignment:

Starting from the list we generate in class you will choose one subject or theme and collect all visual images (still or moving) that you encounter for 10 days that relate to your chosen subject. Then through observation, conversation, analysis you will dissect these images – finding connections and disconnections, ruptures, points of contention, and breaks.

  • For 10 days collect any image you see each day that speaks to your chosen subject/theme.
  • Create a visual/photo/illustrated essay in InDesign of your collection from studio + seminar.
  • Consider the points of connection-disconnection between the items.
  • Consider how this stream-of-conscious/going with the gut style of collecting could speak to your interests.
  • Consider the items as a group, in small pairings, and as individuals.
  • Is there background research that is applicable.
  • Use your analysis from Seminar as the text for your visual essay.

My Theme was Education, it means that I needed to find anything that educates people in a way. Either photography, objects, pictures from the internet. etc. For the 10 days, I could not find anything in real form, however, every day while looking at my phone and laptop, I found some pictures from Instagram, Pinterest, and Google which I, later on, picked for this project. I sorted the pictures into 3 Themes: Art, Environment, and Life lessons, then I made an essay for seminar that will be used in my InDesign project. For the inDesign, I did not really do any brainstorms, I just jumped into making it, however I had a draft before my final one.

The 12 Pictures I Collected (Before Edit)

For my InDesign project, I decided to keep it simple and monochromatic and in order to do that, I had to match the color tones of my pictures. I edited some of the pictures using the Adobe Lightroom mobile app and a little bit of photoshop to enhance the pictures to fit the theme I want.

Indesign Draft

This is my draft, I thought that it needed a little bit of color and some real drawings, which is why for the Final finished product, I used my Ipad to draw doodles on top of the design to make the final pop out and a lot more fun since I incorporated different colors on the doodles.

REFLECTION

Since my theme was Education, collecting those pictures not only helped my project, it also reminded me of how important art is in life, how important it is to take good care of mother nature before its too late and also how important it is to be yourself, find the good in yourself, accept changes, and to not be afraid to express ourselves in life. This project helped me become a better person, even though the changes are not instant, at least it reminded and educated me. In terms of the design itself, I was scared at once, since the only Adobe app I could work with was Photoshop. I was scared to have to learn Indesign because It looked difficult and it required me to learn from the basics. However, after the demo in class and looking at lots of lynda.com videos before class, I finally got the hang of it and managed to do my final project on time. Surprisingly, Indesign is not as hard as I thought it would be, I really enjoyed making the layouts, and overall enjoyed the process of photo editing, doodling, looking for ideas and inspiration online. This project pushed me to work outside of my comfort zone by having to use InDesign. It was also the first time for me to try doodling with iPad and syncing it to my laptop. I now know that I should not be scared of trying something before I even try it because what I was scared of once turned out to be really exciting and educating. I really learned a lot from this project.
