Our group chooses a data that was most interesting and fun to work with. “The most 2011 popular baby name in NYC” looked like a data that we can visualize in our unique entertaining way and was the most interesting data from open source. We started our project with organizing the names through diversity and ranking the most popular name for each 4-diversity group, White, Black, Hispanic and Asians. We analyzed the top 5 rank baby names for diversity group and made in to bar graph to compare the names that were most popular or most commonly used baby names in 2011 compare to total population of NYC. All the graph and analysis of our data will be attached on our scientific approach map. It includes the possible reasons for four different diversity groups choose those specific names. After the analysis and creating bar and pie graphs, we discussed for long time, how we should create visualization for our given data. We got another data from open source about 2011 population distribution in NYC. We plug in the data to CARDB website and got the map of each diversity living in particular area in NYC. For example, Asians have lowest population and lowest distribution in NYC, they settle in small part in NYC beside Manhattan Bridge and Williamsburg Bridge (China Town, Canal Street). After the diversity location map is created we put popular names in the graph. The bigger font indicates the most common name. We focus on showing the fun and interactive visualization, trying to look for their own names in our graph. Our group has made two versions of visualization. There is scientific approach version including analysis of numbers compared with population of NYC and there is presentation version. It mainly focuses on our graph with the definition and meaning of the most popular names for each diversity group with pictures. We enjoyed the process and glad of our outcome of this project. We think the biggest challenge was choosing and finding the data we wanted to visualize, and thinking process of creating our visualization. Now we know the style and strength of each group members, when we work next time, we think we will be able to communicate and corporate better. However our communication and objective were pretty clear, despite its our first time working as a team.
