Virtual reality: wearable sculptures

Inspiration…

The inspiration for this project was taken from the medieval wear: the ruff. Back then, the purpose of it was to demonstrate wealth, social class, and power because it holds the posture upright.

These Ruffs showed status and were uncomfortable yet very trendy.

Idea…

The idea for this project is to criticize and show how today we are blinded by trends of fashion. We wear items and outfits that aren’t necessarily comfortable, or because we like them but because they are trendy.

Process…

Using long wooden sticks we chopped them in have to make the length shorter, and then we chopped them in half by the other way in order to make them thinner in width. After that, we planned how the sticks would be stuck together and we organized them in a way that would make it stay in place over the head. Finally, we stabled the structure together and it was ready to go.

The sculpture is not comfortable which is the first aspect of the virtual reality.

The second virtual reality aspect of it is when you wear the head “situation” your head is in a closed tight environment while your body is in another space and free. You can’t see the “outside world” which forces you to use your other senses besides sight to get around and know what is happening.

Photoshoot at Palais Royal…

The created wearable object ended up heavier than we thought, but that still didn’t interfere with its placement over the head.

Chosen images …

For the final presentation of the object, we decided to create a gif with the sculpture. For that to look interesting, when I was wearing the sculpture at Palais Royal, I had to spin very slowly and hold the position for a couple of seconds so that Farah, my classmate, could take the needed pictures.

Final outcome…
