For this assignment, we were asked to make a three dimensional form of one of our chosen orthographic hand drawings. We were also asked to consider how the hand would be displayed and how we would demonstrate the hand’s detail. I chose to go with a rather interesting hand gesture that would make holding things relatively easy. Although it was hard, I think I really challenged myself by choosing this hand gesture. First, I started by making a simple foundation for the hand with 18 gauge wire. Then, I added the 3D dimension of the hand with the 24 gauge wire to make it pop. I decided to make my hand hold one of my favorite polaroids of me and my twin sister. This polaroid means so much to me and the hand pretty much illuminates it’s importance because of the way the polaroid stands out from the metal hand.
In the two-dimensional drawing, you could get away with not having the proportions exactly accurate. However, in making the three-dimensional piece, you really had to pay attention to making the proportions accurate in order for it to actually look like a hand. Another factor that was different between the two was the fact that I was working with wire that was hard to maneuver. Drawing with a pencil was much easier, I have to say.
