(Space & Materiality) Project A1: Take Something Apart

My first impression on this activity was interesting and was over my expectation of this class from my perspectives. Moreover, through this activity, I was able to learn so many valuable lessons of the significance of each individual materials and also the utilization of the tools. For this project, we were assigned to choose an object or a material and  deconstruct the object into its component parts. Therefore, I had to look for the materials around the city. I went to several stores such as grocery stores or electronic stores and during this process, I thought that it would be interesting to discover the inside component of a calculator. In my point of view, calculator was a compelling object due to the fact that I am a student who has been using calculator for many years. I was always curious about the calculators whenever I was using it. For these reasons, I was so excited about this activity. While working on the process of deconstructing, I struggled for a while because of the tiny little screw. It was so hard to pull out the tiny screw since it acquired the proper sized tool for pulling it out. Consequently, I had to run out to the pharmacy and look for  a proper size tool for pulling the little screw out. After using the right tool, I was able to solve the problem very easily. Throughout this struggle, I was able to receive a lesson of the importance of the right tool’s usage. Furthermore, after taking out the back of the calculator, I was able to learn how this small calculator is formed with so many other small materials. While pulling out each small materials one by one, my curiosity of the role of each material increased. I wanted to find out more about how each materials work together with one another. After finishing this project, I realized that it gave me more positive lessons than I expected. The process of deconstructing the object has gave me an opportunity to look into details that I could not discover and looking deeply into an one object gave me a lesson of the important value of each small materials.
