Bridge 5 Reflection

Bridge 5 Reflection

For my last Bridge project 5, I had to create an artist book. According to this reason, I wanted to create a collection of what I have learned and developed throughout my Constructive Environment studio and seminar class. Before I explain the specifics about my artist book, I wanted to talk about the learnings that I’ve learned in this semester. Even though I am going to be focusing on my studies in communication design which is more graphic and product base, I picked this theme “Constructive Environment” because I believed I should gain more knowledge about the environment and detailed ways to develop our world as a whole. I believed this would become very helpful as a basis of my knowledge as a designer and an artist. In keeping with my expectations, this course was very helpful to develop my perspectives of looking at the world of design and also with the methods of constructing my design process. Since we had to focus on one specific area “Canal Street” and developed our design processes through investigating, researching, planning and more, I was able to reach each process in more depth and wisdom.

While living in New York, I had to face a lot of difficulties such as tiredness, feeling of emptiness, and exaggerating days of my everyday life. I could not understand and accept these hardships that I was suffering due to the reason that New York was my dream city to live. I previously thought that I had to push myself to be grateful for this circumstance. However, after I was able to investigate and research deeply about the city of New York in this course, I was able to discover the causes of my hardships which were lack of reflection and contemplation. I’ve realized that I was too busy chasing my personal expectations and accomplishments instead of spending time to reflect on myself and think about what I really want, what I think, what I am doing every day and what my inside is seeking for. It was also the circumstance of New York that was leading my set goals to be higher and unreachable. I got this realization when I was exploring the theme “reflection”. After I was able to learn the importance and the value of reflection, I got a desire as an artist to create a design that could help with what this city is lacking and so, I applied this to my studio designs.

As a consequence, through my artist book, I wanted to combine these valuable understandings from this course. That being so, for my artist book, not only I included photographs from Canal Street, but I also let myself to explore with no restrictions and intended to create a collection about New York city and took photographs of the places that have contrasting atmosphere from New York city in general. Moreover, those spaces were where gave me the feeling of relaxation in a complex city. In addition, I included the words that I wanted to inform for New Yorkers. Those were, “ It is significant for us to take the time to reflect on ourselves and think about what we really want, what we think, what we’re doing every day in our lives in place of being affected by outside surroundings in our depths.” and, “Realize that the sensibility is the center of our abilities and it is the key source that draws emotions of ourselves and also an important element of providing one’s confidence and Presence.”

Overall, from Constructive Environment class, I found that I had grown more open to learning and to try new techniques in order to better myself not only as an artist or a student but as a person as a whole. This class gave me wisdom that I have whole this room in me to learn more about the world and how to apply myself within it. In addition, from learning the importance of reflection, I am now more flexible to overcome the hardships towards me and self-management. I wanted to remind not only to the New Yorkers but also to myself again that while living in this city, we should not forget to recognize the importance of our presence and value inside the city. Lastly, I really wanted to thank my professors Rebecca and Aaron for teaching and leading me to this area of Constructive Environment. Without their advice and teachings, I would not have been able to finish with this development.
