HUMANS OF NEW YORK

Jason is an artist from Toronto. What intrigued me most about Jason were his piercing blue eyes. He also seemed to have a muscular build, one that a painter wouldn’t have so I used that to my advantage during class when I labeled him not only as an artist but also a butcher, sculptor, ex-navy seal, etc.

Jessica is originally from Maryland and was a very interesting woman to speak to. What drew my attention to her was her colorful shirt and funky hair. I first thought she was a nanny because she was pushing an extremely expensive stroller. I later found out she just gave birth to her first son named Peace and she lives in Manhattan with her husband who is in the music industry. She graduated from FIT and loves fashion design and painting. We ended up exchanging numbers and I helped her carry her stroller down to the subway.

Joe is from upstate New York and we bonded over our connections with northern MI. He happens to produce maple syrup and said, “I love making the world a sweeter place.”

For this project we were told to venture out of our comfort zone and start conversations with strangers and take a portrait of them. In today’s society, stereotypes are especially prevalent with social media being a main focus. The people I approached often surprised me with their professions, I had already judged them by what they looked like without even realizing. This project helped me gain confidence and furthered my conversation skills. As I began taking pictures and mingling with those around me, I feel like I learned a lot of life lessons, such as the power of being humble. I thoroughly enjoyed this assignment and would love to continue this project outside of school.
