Basic Design Language
Utilizing the silhouetted figures from weeks of figure drawing students will create a series of six compositional plates. These plates will demonstrate an understanding of Gestalt Theory and the basics elements of composition. Visually demonstrate an understanding of the basic elements of the design language:

Overview
Create six ELEMENTS OF DESIGN PLATES.
First select 10 drawings from the Life Drawing component of this
class to photograph, format in Photoshop, then place into
Illustrator. Finally, one Figure will be selected to manipulate in
order to create a series of patterns and designs.
Objectives
Choose six or more design concepts from the seven listed below,
additionally keeping in mind Basic Design Concepts addressed in the
presentations, to visually express this language.
Plates may embody more than one of the concepts addressed.
Elements
1) Symmetry
Distribution of equal forces around a central point or axis
2) Asymmetry
Distribution of dissimilar visual weights in such a way that those on either
side seem to offset each other
3) Optical Illusion
Images that produce a visual phenomenon in the perception of the viewer
that does not actually exist
4) Radiation
The act of spreading outward from a central source, the act or condition of
diverging in all directions from a center
5) Direction
A position to which a motion is referred. A line leading to a place or point, the line or course along which a person or thing moves.
6) Anomaly
A deviation from the normal or common order or form or rule
7) Repetition
The repeated use of a series of shapes to create a pattern

Evaluation Outcomes
Make certain to:
Demonstrate an understanding of the basic elements of design and
composition through a series of preliminary sketches in a sketchbook
Documented exploration in Illustrator of all steps
Demonstrate an understanding of the basic elements of design, within the
final Six Plates. These must be printed using the Plotter.
Each Plate Must be carefully cut out, leaving a one each clean border all the way around.
(Each page will be 10×10″)
The Six Plates project progress must be shown on Learning Portfolio.

Final Printed Art Boards are DUE: 2/25 In class Critique
Six Plates post must be complete then as well.
