For our final Drawing and Imaging project, we had to focus on texture when creating three last pieces in the form of collages. During Thanksgiving break, I visited the MET and the MoMa museums and photographed different artworks that explored with different illusions if texture by using lines and brush strokes.
I did some sketches on my notebook of different textures I found interesting.
First, I started playing around with a selection of Van Goghs Sunflowers that showed a lot of texture because of the brush strokes. I mixed one of my photographs of a girl painted on the face and played with different layer modes to incorporate it into the sunflowers.
I incorporated different elements into the work and after a while, I decided that I didn’t like the outcome so I turned off the sunflower layer and started working with my graphite sketches to create texture, keeping it in grey tones.
Later on, I incorporated some color in the form of triangle shapes to create a focal point alongside her neck and clavicles. It turned out to look like a neckpiece which I liked.
As the second collage, I chose to incorporate the sunflowers and make a selection of the piece.
For my analog collage, I cut strips of paper with an image to recreate a horizon and used markers to make the telephone pole. In the end, I added strips of tracing paper to give it more depth. I liked the contrast between the background image and the black lines, it creates an interesting. I really wanted to work with the sunflowers, in fact, I cut a lot of them but in the end, they didn’t seem to fit into my work so I left them out.
