What was the purpose of watching this video?
The purpose of watching David McCandless’s Ted Talk was to understand how we can change the way we show data to make it easier to visualize and understand the information we want to share. On our upcoming Bridge Project, we have to show information and data of our neighborhoods in a visual way so it was a way to introduce ourselves to the design of data visualization.
What did you learn from this talk?
I learned that the way we show information can be designed to make it easier to understand and more meaningful. Nowadays, visual information is everywhere and this can cause information overload. McCandless explains how we can design the way we present information or data to make it easier to understand, tell a story or highlight an important part. He explains how everything we see gets into our unconscious and how we can make this have more meaning if we mix the visual language of the eye with the logical language of the mind, thus presenting data in a visual manner. It’s very important because designing the way we show this data can affect people’s understanding, perspective and mindset towards something.
