BRIDGE 3: Issues/Questions/Needs/Potentials

Description

For Bridge 3 we had to gather all the previous information from our neighborhoods and identify problems or situations that we could improve in Bridge 4. Using a mindmap technique we had to explain our thought process and after that, make a 3D model or drawing that represented that problem. Working with all the information we gathered for seminar our goal was to select and put together ideas that could show potential problems, needs, and that could help us come up with a plan of action

Deliverables

Reflection

For this Bridge Project I chose to explore different potential problems or situations in Jackson Heights and divide them into three categories: community, public spaces, and economics. Since the beginning of the semester it has been evident the lack of public spaces in Jackson Heights but I wanted to find connections to the other problems and see if it had more consequences than just the lack of a space in the community. From the different people I talked to all of them mentioned something about the lack of social life in the neighborhood and the lack of recreational activities around the neighborhood. From all my visits of the neighborhood the thing that I enjoyed the most was walking around the street vendors and from the research I did I found out that street vendors are having a lot of trouble working on the streets because of restrictions, permits and the lack of space. Also, one of the things that I wanted to work with at the beginning of the project was with bringing the different communities together, but more than forcing them to interact giving them an opportunity to interact spontaneously and from everything we read in our seminar class I think that street life and the small interactions in them are a great place to start. I think that the street vendors are a great opportunity for people to interact and that they can generate situations where people come together to share.

I enjoyed making the mindmaps about the information I had gathered for seminar but I had a lot of trouble with the 2D/3D deliverable. I really wanted to make a 3D model, since I really like making things but due to the current situation I didn’t have any materials to work with and it was very frustrating to have an idea for something but not being able to make it. I ended up doing a drawing and trying to represent the situation I would have shown in the model. Now I look forward to working on Bridge 4 and having more time to come up with new ideas to make a model without a lot of materials.
