Assignment #23 – Reading Chapter 5 – DEFINITION/MODELING

  • Modeling is an exploration tool and not the end
  • Eliminate as many unknowns as possible before starting the manufacturing process
  • Balance of the making it perfect and getting it done concepts
  • Design needs have a hierarchy and designs must meet these needs in order, no skipping levels
  • Order of priority:
  1. Functionality
  • Does it do what it’s supposed to do
  • Testing
  1. Reliability
  • Consistency of performance
  • Reliability goes hand in hand with safety
  1. Usability
  • The experience of the design
  • How easy it is to use
  1. Proficiency
  • Improving the user’s experience
  • Allowing things to be done better than before
  • Finding ways to improve existing designs by adding new technology or challenging existing views of how things should be
  1. Creativity
  • After everything else is done
  • Changing perceptions and experiences
  • Change is good

Anatomy of an idea

  • Break idea into physical parts to study each of them, their function and their purpose
  • Examine unnecessary additions
  • Examine ecological impact

Details

  • Can be decorative but also functional
  • Sketching and mapping can give you a sense of which details are important and which aren’t

Creating Models and samples

  • Physical representation of an idea
  • Efficient way of exploring an idea
  • It doesn’t have to be finished
  • Explore and solve issues
  • Different perception as drawings
  • Be aware of the functionality of the design in real conditions and not only in the model scale

Obsession with modeling

  • Don’t get obsessed with the model making part and leave behind the actual design
  • We can use the model to solve different problems we come up with

Strategies

  1. Dimensionality
  • The model gives you a framework to work inside
  • 2d or 3d?
  1. Functionality
  • The dimensionality of the model may be decided by how functional it should be
  • Mechanical function implies 3d
  • How can we represent function without 3d
  1. Choosing scale
  • Keep a standard scale
  1. Choosing materials
  • The materials may not scale well
  1. Time management
  • Allow for mistakes and redos
  • Plan accordingly

Reinspire

  • Don’t loose motivation
  • Don’t let fatigue take over
