For our Drawing and Imaging Final, we were instructed to create an infographic that features three icons, a invoking color palette, and at least three facts. I am extremely passionate about the idea of prison reform and Mass Incarceration of the marginalized, and recently held a screening of the documentary ’13th’ at school. I chose to make an infographic about Mass Incarceration and avoid a stereotypical color scheme of orange, black, gray. Instead, I wanted the audience to be drawn in with curiosity from the color palette and ponder the two silhouettes I chose, which happen to be famous prisons.
My facts were:
1 in 3 black men in the United States will go to prison or jail if current trends continue.
African Americans comprising only 12% of the US population but 44% of its incarcerated.
The United States accounts for only 5% of the world’s population, but is responsible for nearly 22% of the world’s prison population.
More than 2 million people are incarcerated in U.S. prisons as well as local and county jails.
Increase in prison population is largely driven by heavier penalties for non-violent offenses.
The icons I chose to illustrate are supposed to represent handcuffs, a sword, and a burglar mask.
Some of the critiques I received were to move #FREETHENEWSCHOOL from within the bars so the connotation of corruption isn’t associated with the school, make the icons smaller, and make the design of them more recognizable.
