Cooper Hewitt Reflection

The first piece that caught my attention during our trip to Cooper Hewitt was this table called the “Shimmer Table”. This fascinating piece of furniture was designed by Patricia Urquiola and is constructed with glass panels, each of which are covered with a multi-chromatic finish. This finish allows the color of the table to vary depending on the angle in which the table is viewed at. The table instantly grabbed my attention with its vibrant eye catching colors. The piece engages its viewers as well, I had to move around the piece to experience the different colors and shadow formations. This piece is unique as its simple design suddenly becomes so much more complex once light hits the surfaces, creating colorful reflections and shadows that give way to new patterns and forms. “Shimmer Table” inspired me with its incredible use of form, shadows, and, color, these are all aspects I hope to focus on in my art in the future.

Another piece that peaked my interest was “Poster, Specimen”. This large offset lithograph on paper was designed by Fanette Mellier. The abstract piece is completely composed of printer control marks, using only the standard colors used and tested during printing. I love the composition of “Poster, Specimen” as its both abstract and structured/geometrical at the same time. This piece inspires me because of its focus to make the ordinary  extraordinary. Printer control marks are mundane and not considered special, they are often overlooked in daily life, however this piece forces the viewer to pay attention to something they often gloss over, making it seem special and beautiful. I am inspired by the idea of turning something average into something extraordinary.

Another piece I found inspiring was Albert Gregory’s series of screen prints. These prints experiment with form and color interactions to create incredibly colorful graphic pieces. These pieces are unique as they demonstrate a printing technique known as moire, which creates a rippling effect. In the future I would like to design more graphic pieces similar in style to these prints.
