East Village: Fashion Design Final Project

issue 1: catcalling is a huge problem in my neighborhood. everyday i witness or experience catcalling and everyday women ignore the catcalling rather than fight back. so i wanted to raise awareness to men how its affecting women and how it makes them feel. i ran into a website that shows statistics to artist who tried to raise awareness called http://www.stopstreetharassment.org/

issue 2: i see that recycling is pretty big in NYC, seeing all the different trash cans for different recyclables are pretty neat. when i thought people frequently recycled i still saw people to opened up trash can to take out plastic bottles and other recyclables. people see recycling as a nuisance so i propose to design a garment to make recycling important by seeing what happens when people don’t recycle.

issue 3: skateboarding is dangerous in non skateboarding areas. i see kids and people getting hurt because of people doing tricks. i also see cars getting into accidents because of skateboarders. skateboarders should be aware of the laws and where they can skateboard.

refined design statement:

Gender-based street harassment is unwanted. It is a serious issue that isn’t receiving enough attention. I’m creating a video that informs the public about how victims feel when they are cat-called. I’m designing a dress made of paper tabs with degrading, objectifying remarks. I will present the concept to the public as a street performance and document it in video. As the model wears the dress on the street, the tabs will be ripped off different men revealing her skin until she is almost naked. This represents how women feel vulnerable and naked as a result of unwanted comments.

i think the final product worked out really well and the audio really resonated with the video making the video more of an impact. if i were to present this to the public i would feature this video in sports bars, gyms, etc where there is a mass male audience to educate them how women really feel and show a different perceptive of men and how degrading it can be.
